Mission & Services

Our mission is to provide the community with the highest standards of service and compassion on behalf of the people and animals in our care. By providing our shelter animals with the best possible care and enrichment, coupled with flexible programs for adoption, foster, and outreach, we strive to:

  • Treat every animal with kindness and compassion.

  • Reunite every lost animal with its owner.

  • Find every adoptable animal a loving home.

  • Control the pet population by promoting spay/neuter of dogs and cats.

  • Advocate for animal welfare and an end to the homeless animal crisis.

We provide the following services:

  • Basic care of animals while they await their owner, rescue, or adopter

  • Shelter medicine, primarily spay/neuter before adoption

  • Animal adoptions

  • Dog licensing for Yolo County residents

  • Response to calls regarding stray animals, animal abuse, barking/vicious dogs, wildlife intrusion, and animal carcasses

By providing this broad scope of services, we benefit in cost savings and flexibility:

  • We can spread our staff, equipment, and other resources across field, kennel, and office operations to minimize duplication of expertise and expense.

  • We can reassign or reallocate a larger total resource pool as specific needs and opportunities arise.

Under an annual contract with the County, each jurisdiction (Davis, West Sacramento, Winters, Woodland, UC Davis) is billed for service use, less revenue from licensing and other fees.
