Color Code System

Each volunteer will be provided an identification card that indicates his or her proficiency level - Blue, Orange, or Purple. We expect volunteers to carry this card while working on-site for security and safety purposes.

Blue

  • New to YCAS or has limited animal handling experience

  • Works with the easiest animals


Orange

  • Shadowed a trainer and worked at least four shifts

  • Demonstrated animal handling skills and experience

  • Can address specific behavioral or medical issues

  • Works with animals that are moderately difficult to handle


Purple

  • Demonstrated commitment to shelter (six shifts or equivalent)

  • Able and willing to work with all breeds, sizes and behaviors

  • Responds appropriately to animal body language and behavior

  • Works with the most challenging animals
