Change of Shift

When You Start Your Shift

  • Check in with staff to prioritize activities and to confirm which cats you can handle.

  • Check that each cat has access to all parts of cage and that all occupied cages are locked.

  • Look at cage cards and familiarize yourself with the cats and kittens. Note remarks by staff and volunteers (e.g., not good with children, very shy, indoor-only, only cat, no dogs).

  • Check water – bowl should be no more than half full. Each room has a watering can to refill bowls without having to open door.

  • Check food – bowl should be half full with kitten/adult food; refill from bins in hallway or in each room.

  • Check litter box - if used, pour litter into trash bin. If bottom of box is not soiled, refill with fresh litter from Adoption 3; if wet or soiled, discard box and take a new one from shelf.

  • Check toys – keep toy hanging from door and 2 or 3 toys in middle of each occupied cage.

Reconcile the cats with whiteboard information:

  • Check that every adoptable cat is listed with correct cage number and Animal ID (A#).

  • If you notice an adoptable cat has changed location, is not listed on a whiteboard, or has been adopted or rescued, update the whiteboards accordingly. If a cat is brought in during your shift, add the cat’s name and A# to the whiteboard.

  • If a cat is not named yet, you may name it. Write the name on cage card and whiteboard (along with A#), then provide front desk with this information at the end of your shift. Ask Front Office staff to confirm that the cat does not already have a name. Changing a name on the whiteboard or kennel card alone is not enough to finalize a naming update.

Before You Leave

  • Check food and water bowls – they should be half full.

  • Check litter boxes – replace any that are soiled.

  • Lock all occupied cages.

  • Prop open door to GA Room.

  • Update whiteboard by noting your visits and comments.

  • Wash your hands.
