Change of Shift
When You Start Your Shift
Check in with staff to prioritize activities and to confirm which cats you can handle.
Check that each cat has access to all parts of cage and that all occupied cages are locked.
Look at cage cards and familiarize yourself with the cats and kittens. Note remarks by staff and volunteers (e.g., not good with children, very shy, indoor-only, only cat, no dogs).
Check water – bowl should be no more than half full. Each room has a watering can to refill bowls without having to open door.
Check food – bowl should be half full with kitten/adult food; refill from bins in hallway or in each room.
Check litter box - if used, pour litter into trash bin. If bottom of box is not soiled, refill with fresh litter from Adoption 3; if wet or soiled, discard box and take a new one from shelf.
Check toys – keep toy hanging from door and 2 or 3 toys in middle of each occupied cage.
Reconcile the cats with whiteboard information:
Check that every adoptable cat is listed with correct cage number and Animal ID (A#).
If you notice an adoptable cat has changed location, is not listed on a whiteboard, or has been adopted or rescued, update the whiteboards accordingly. If a cat is brought in during your shift, add the cat’s name and A# to the whiteboard.
If a cat is not named yet, you may name it. Write the name on cage card and whiteboard (along with A#), then provide front desk with this information at the end of your shift. Ask Front Office staff to confirm that the cat does not already have a name. Changing a name on the whiteboard or kennel card alone is not enough to finalize a naming update.
